From July 5 to July 10, 2023, the professor conducted an official field trip to Düsseldorf and Duisburg, Germany, supported by the European Union, to participate in international academic conferences organized by the Korea University EU Centre. The primary purpose of the visit was to engage in discussions on an EU Centre–led international conference and the publication of a Northern Chapter research volume. On July 6, the professor attended a conference in Düsseldorf alongside scholars from Korea, Germany, and the United States, where in-depth discussions were held on Eurasian geopolitics, sustainable northern policy, and comparative security frameworks. Key themes included the transformation of the Eurasian region, the role of the EU in global security, and South Korea’s strategic position amid shifting geopolitical dynamics. On July 7, the professor participated in a full-day conference at the University of Duisburg-Essen, focusing on NATO–AP4 security connectivity, EU energy and hydrogen strategy, and evolving multilateral and minilateral cooperation frameworks. The discussions also addressed Germany’s geopolitical strategy in the context of U.S.–China competition and the Indo-Pacific paradigm. On July 8, the professor joined a roundtable session in Düsseldorf featuring presentations by Korea University researchers on U.S. extended nuclear deterrence and comparative perspectives between European NATO allies and South Korea. Throughout the visit, the professor engaged actively with European scholars and policy experts to explore avenues for sustainable Korea–EU academic and policy cooperation. The visit concluded with discussions on strengthening EU cooperation and enhancing collaboration between the Korea University EU Centre and the European host institutions.
