On January 30, 2024, the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins SAIS and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, Korea University along with Ilmin International Relations Institute at Korea University co-hosted the conference “Transformation of Eurasian Geopolitics: Implications for Korea and Northeast Asia.” Held in Washington, D.C., the event gathered leading scholars and policymakers to examine the geopolitical and geoeconomic transformation of Eurasia in the context of the Ukraine war, U.S.–China strategic competition, and shifting energy and technology supply chains. Presentations by Prof. Kent Calder, Dr. Jacopo Maria Pepe, and Prof. Hannes Mosler addressed systemic changes in Eurasian integration, Europe’s decoupling from Russian energy, and emerging security and connectivity dynamics linking Europe and the Indo-Pacific. Luncheon remarks were delivered by Seth Bailey, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.
The conference prominently featured Prof. Jae-Seung Lee, Jean Monnet Chair and Director at Korea University, who moderated Session 1 and presented on “New Security Connectivity: NATO and the Asia-Pacific Partnership.” Through his leadership and active engagement, the Jean Monnet EU Centre of Excellence (JMCE) played a central role in shaping the intellectual agenda and strengthening transatlantic dialogue on Eurasian transformation. The event concluded by reaffirming the importance of deeper Europe–Asia cooperation and highlighting JMCE’s position as a key platform for advancing research and policy discussions on evolving Eurasian geopolitics.
