The international academic program “Conferences EURASIA 2023” was held from July 6 to July 11, 2023, in Germany (Düsseldorf and Duisburg-Essen) and Romania (Bucharest and Constanța) . The series of conferences and roundtables focused on “New Regionalism in Eurasia” and the geopolitical transformation of Eurasia amid the Ukraine war and intensifying global strategic competition. The events brought together leading scholars and policymakers from Europe and Asia, with the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (JMCE) at Korea University playing a central and coordinating role throughout the program.
The program began on July 6 in Düsseldorf with the “New Regionalism in Eurasia: Progress Report Meeting,” followed by a book project meeting co-chaired by Prof. Dr. Kent Calder and Prof. Dr. Jae-Seung Lee, Jean Monnet Chair and Director of the Ilmin Institute for International Affairs . Prof. Jae-Seung Lee, representing JMCE, chaired key sessions and co-led the academic agenda, demonstrating JMCE’s leadership in shaping the intellectual framework of the conference.
On July 7 in Duisburg-Essen, the conference continued under the theme “Transformation of Eurasia: Views from Europe and Asia,” where Prof. Kent Calder and Prof. Jae-Seung Lee presented the Book Project Overview . JMCE-affiliated scholars, including Dr. Hee Kyoung Chang and Dr. Chang-Rhyong Oh, actively contributed to chapter presentations and discussions, further reinforcing JMCE’s core role in advancing the Eurasian research network.
The main Eurasia Conference was held on July 10 at the Romanian-American University (RAU) in Bucharest . The Opening Ceremony included welcoming remarks by Prof. Dr. Costel Negricea (Rector of RAU) and H.E. Mr. Kap-soo Rim (Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Romania), underscoring the diplomatic and institutional significance of the event. In the keynote session, Prof. Kent Calder addressed “The Ukraine War and Eurasia’s Transformation,” while Prof. Jae-Seung Lee delivered a keynote speech titled “New Security Connectivity: NATO and the Asia-Pacific Partnership” . His address highlighted emerging cross-regional security linkages and positioned JMCE as a leading platform for dialogue between Europe and Asia.
The conference concluded with a roundtable in Constanța on July 11 at Ovidius University, focusing on “The Russo-Ukrainian War and the Black Sea Geopolitics” . Prof. Jae-Seung Lee again delivered a keynote speech on “Building a New Security Identity: Geo-politics and Geo-economic Challenges for South Korea,” reaffirming JMCE’s strategic vision in connecting Northeast Asia and Eurasian security dynamics.
Overall, Conferences EURASIA 2023 demonstrated JMCE’s role not merely as a participant but as the main academic driver and coordinating institution. Through keynote speeches, session chairmanship, research coordination, and collaboration with European universities and policymakers, JMCE significantly shaped the discourse on Eurasian transformation and strengthened Korea University’s position as a leading hub for EU–Asia strategic studies.![]()
