Professor Heungkoo Lee from Ilmin International Relations Institute had brought up the topic about the EU energy transition. He first introduced the energy transition in the EU with its brief history. The EU had begun its institutional development of renewable energy since early 2000s. The major challenges for Europe are sustainability with aspect of climate change response, supply security, energy price and efficiency. There were various energy directives made in last two decades. Furthermore, the EU tried to respond to the possible challenges from geopolitical situation. After the Ukraine gas crisis in 2009 and 2014, Europe started to discuss and form an Energy Union, which set into motion in 2015. The most significant energy transition policy of the EU is European Green Deal (2019), which the European Union as a whole set a new goal. Professor then presented additional case studies on the UK and Germany’s case, evaluating their goals and current status on energy transition.
