The Jean Monnet EU Centre of Excellence receives academic papers on Europe-Asia connectivity for its Junior Research Fellowship Program. Johanna Gunthild Brigida Rust (Ph.D candidate at Ruhr-University Bochum) was recognized for the research on “Asia-Europe Energy Connectivity: The Rise of a New European Union?” This paper discusses China´s influence on the EU´s policymaking and foreign energy policy in Central Asia. Moreover, this paper explores the different energy-related approaches of the EU and China towards Central Asia by examining China´s impact on the EU´s foreign energy policy outreach in the region. The author argues that the EU should take a proactive lead in regional cooperation providing cooperation mechanisms for further connecting the Eurasian space.
